SPIRIT WAS NEVER JUST A DANCE SCHOOL.

We are dance, music and community.

Teaching well matters to us. A lot. But that is only the beginning.

Classes, socials, live music, festivals and plenty of joyful chaos. That is Spirit.

SPIRIT · SINCE 2008

IT ALL STARTED
WITH A FEW SHOTS.

Spirit began almost as a joke. Late one night in a bar, Royal Crown Revue—the band behind the soundtrack to The Mask—was playing.

We were dancing and a woman called Laura was hanging around. I honestly thought she was waiting to ask the drummer for an autograph, but she came over and said she wanted to learn to dance the way we did.

Mostly as a joke, because it was not in my plans, I wrote my number on a napkin and told her to call me when she had ten couples. I was certain it would never happen.

Two days later she called to say she had them. It seemed impossible, but I had made a promise, so I said we would go ahead.

Her boyfriend, Nacho, and a group of industrial-engineering friends had a cultural association in Cabanyal. Together with a group of women, mostly audiovisual students, they formed a class in no time: they were already friends interested in unusual cultural activities.

If we were going to begin, I decided we would take it seriously. I spoke to the University of Valencia and another cultural association, Ca Revolta, and we began teaching in all three places.

From there we moved to a theatre school on Calle Blanquerías, which eventually became Spirit. Then to another school in Ruzafa. And from there to our current home.

18 YEARS. AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
