This code applies when you take part in Spirit classes, social dances and events, and when you interact in our digital spaces and social media.
Respect
We are committed to respecting everyone regardless of gender expression, sexual orientation, race, religion, nationality, age, physical ability, lifestyle, dance experience or dance role.
Respect other people's physical, emotional and personal boundaries, including personal space and the space available on the dance floor. Pay attention to verbal and non-verbal signals and adapt your behaviour. Unwanted or inappropriate behaviour, harassment and abuse—verbal or physical—are not tolerated.
Consent
Asking for or accepting a dance is never an obligation. You may invite someone verbally or with a clear gesture, always politely. Anyone may decline without giving a reason.
Either person may withdraw consent at any time and for any reason. If someone declines, respect their decision.
Dance roles
Dance roles are not linked to gender. Anyone may choose either role and in class we encourage everyone to learn and practise both.
Dance is a dialogue: both roles suggest, listen and respond. Nobody commands anybody else.
Inappropriate behaviour
Verbal, emotional, physical or sexual harassment and intimidation will not be tolerated in Spirit classes, social events or online spaces.
This includes offensive comments, deliberate intimidation, stalking, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption, inappropriate physical contact and unwanted sexual attention. If you have a problem, contact the Spirit team.
In class
Teachers are there to offer corrections and advice at the right time. Do not correct classmates: we firmly believe that feedback is not given, it is requested.
At social events
A social is not the place to test or correct other people. Keep jumps and aerials to circle jams, competitions or performances, and always ask your partner first.
Mind the space around you. If a collision occurs, stop, apologise and check that everyone is all right. When there is live music or a DJ, show your support and appreciation.
Hygiene
Dancing involves physical activity and contact with others. Take care of your personal hygiene, bring spare shirts, deodorant and, if needed, a small towel. Wash your hands frequently.
Thank you for helping us create a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone.
